Class 1: Front Bear Hug

"The Frame" technique teaches you how to defend against a front bear hug. You can see this exact attack, and the amazing woman who defended it in this video!

Things to Notice From The Attack:

  • Nashali's initial use of pushes to keep him off

  • Circling around an obstacle (gym bench) to keep him away + run to the exit

  • The Approach: notice how close he gets to Nashali before she acts (first control the distance!)

  • The first bear hug: notice the opening for the frame + elbows (she tries to punch but punches are not effective at this close distance)

  • The takedown: notice the opening to keep the frame on the head or get legs in front + up kick (Class 6 + 13)

Other observations:

  • Nashali kept her phone in hand the whole fight! Drop your phone, fight with both hands

  • In one article Nashali discussed how difficult it was to use her fingers to dial 911 through the adrenaline.

  • Call 911 without dialing: iphone | android

  • In this full length security footage video, you can see that the attacker stood at the end of the gym just watching Nashali and looking side to side - looking very weird and suspicious - for 2 minutes. Major danger signal/red flag!

Nashali did an incredible job defending herself – with zero training no less! Her advice: "Never Give Up". Even an untrained woman, with confidence and fighting spirit, can defend herself against a man – indeed it happens everyday! To read my blog on the importance of fighting spirit, click here.
